Ocean City's big annual Job Fair will be Saturday, March 7, at the Convention Center, 40th Street and the Coastal Highway. Come in person from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. More than 60 employers will be waiting to talk with you.
Thousands of seasonal jobs are available. That's not an exaggeration. The greatest concentration of job opportunities is in the Hospitality Industry -- restaurants and hotels. Many retail jobs are available in stores along the Boardwalk and other parts of town. Businesses of every sort, from banks to medical offices, also need employees.
In recent years, Ocean City businesses have had difficulty finding enough workers, so European college students have been coming here to work during the season. In 2009, with the worldwide recession, I imagine more people than ever will be seeking jobs in Ocean City.
Come to the Job Fair prepared. Dress nicely. Bring copies of your resume and/or application filled out. It wouldn't be a bad idea to bring your driver's license and social security card. Know the exact starting and stopping dates you will be available to work. If you can start in May or early June, that might be a plus. Or if you can continue working into September or even October, that could be a plus.
Do not underestimate the importance of smiling and being polite. Employers are looking for serious, motivated workers who are also willing to be pleasant and polite to customers and guests. A smile and a "Yes sir," or "Yes ma'am," could land you a job.
One advantage of working in Ocean City is that you don't need a car. We have an excellent 24-hour bus system, and you can ride all day for $2. Almost everyone can get to work by bus or bicycle.
For more information, and to register in advance and fill out an application in advance, go to http://jobfair.oceancity.org. More information to come.
