Assateague Island Wild Horses
Here are two of the best photographs I have ever seen of the wild horses (or wild ponies) on Assateague Island. The horses are very friendly, but they are still wild. Don't get too close!
Assateague's wild horses are said to be descended from horses that swam ashore from a shipwreck hundreds of years ago. The pictures were taken by Mary Lou Lindsay, a member of the Ocean Pines Photography Club.
If you've never visited Maryland's Atlantic Ocean barrier islands, you're in for a treat. This is a great place to rest and recreate, enjoy the beach, take pictures, go fishing, boating, or read a book.
You can find accommodations in Ocean City, Maryland, the barrier island resort which is only a few minutes drive from Assateague Island. Your choices in Ocean City range from luxury oceanfront hotels to affordable family hotels and motels. Best to make a hotel reservation in advance, especially if you're coming between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend. Ocean City also has a great selection of restaurants in all price ranges, and a three-mile-long boardwalk.
